Tooth decay or tooth fracture can cause an abcessed (infected) tooth. In the root canal procedure the infected pulp is removed and the root canals are cleaned and shaped. The root canal and pulp chamber are lined with a sealer and the empty space is filled with gutta percha, a rubber like material, to prevent infection of the space. The tooth is then built back up and restored with a crown.
