When a tooth has a large cavity that weakens the tooth, a large filling that fails, fractures in the enamel, or has had a root canal a dental crown or cap is needed for restoration. First the tooth is prepared to make room for the crown. While waiting for the lab to make the permanent crown (about 2 weeks), a temporary crown is placed over the tooth. The permanent crown can be made of all porcelain, porcelain with a metal substructure for added strength, or all metal. When it is completed the crown in tried in for fit, shape, and color. After the necessary adjustments are made the crown in cemented or bonded to the tooth.
